Module 1: Diagnosis of Canine Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism may be suspected in dogs with a variety of symptoms from skin changes to lethargy and weight gain. By using a combination of thyroid function tests, the patient can be interpreted as to the likelihood of hypothyroidism, but some results are not completely definitive and require additional evaluation. Response to treatment can assist in providing confirmation of the diagnosis.

As can be seen in other endocrine disorders, hypothyroidism can have subtle signs that gradually progress, yet can affect multiple body systems. Once diagnosed, therapy is aimed at supplementing thyroxine levels. Regular therapeutic monitoring is needed to adjust optimize dosages. Emphasizing the need for compliance and consistency in therapy to the owners is crucial.
